I have decided to write three blog posts a week starting from this week. I have as inspiration the article that I had linked to in one of my earlier posts. The link is below
Following the post referred to above I had a conversation with one of my cousins. He said that my blog lacks focus and should be on a narrower and more specific niche. He also said that if I write articles on subjects that I do not have a qualification in then I might face criticism if an expert reads the article and badmouths me online.
I completely agree that I do not have a blog focused on any niche. It is ok for it to be this way for the time being as I am not trying to earn through the blog and only have it as a hobby. But for people looking to establish a reputation online or wanting to earn through their blog it is better that they have a narrow niche that they concentrate on.
It is the second point that I want to make the main subject of this article. The bit about online criticism from experts who happen to come across my (possibly) flawed advice online. I pondered over this question and came up with the following response.
Hi
Thanks for your advice through our telecon. As you said I need to focus my blog on a topic that answers a particular niche. But I have to differ with you on one point.
About your telling me that I should not write articles on Politics or any subject where I do not have a qualification or personal experience relating to the matter, I have another view. After some time of our telecon the following points occurred to me.
- IN Zen Buddhism there is a motto – In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities. In the expert’s there are few. If you remember there is a famous story of a janitor who advised some architects to build an elevator on the outside of a building which was being redeveloped. - There is so much bad content on the Internet that I do not think anyone will take the time to criticize my sincere even if mistaken advice or content that I put out.
- IN the book I told you about – Experts Secrets – there is a piece of advice relating to marketers. It says – If you haven’t offended someone by 12 Noon you are not marketing enough.
- The fourth from the same book says that we need to impress a certain number of people that consume our content online but we definitely can’t impress everybody. There is a difference between mainstream and crazy and I have to find my balance between these two poles. If I have sound reasons (or some reasons at least even if mistaken) for my conclusions then I should not hesitate to state my view. If a person goes to an expert for advice, he will receive only the conventional or mainstream point of view. Nobody will be impressed by me unless I have something different to say especially with my lack of qualifications.
