I spend some time every week answering questions on Quora. For those of you who have not heard of quora.com, it is a question answer site which can give you good guidance if you have any questions you need answered.
Quora has been funded by about US$ 225 million by private investors. It is a 10 year old website that is not going to disappear in a hurry. About 300 million people have registered with the website and it receives about 30 million visitors each month.
One of the topics which is very popular is Self Improvement having 2.3 million followers. And a lot of the questions are about which are the best self-help books to read. I decided to write a blog post answering the question as it seems to be very popular.
So which are the best self help books to read and why?
According to me the best self-help books are the old classics. Authors like Dale Carnegie and Napoleon Hill have written the best books.
This is so for a number of reasons. They are:
- These old classics were published many decades ago. If they are still talked about and purchased and in print so many years after they were written it has to be because many people have been helped by these books. Otherwise they would have been forgotten long ago. As a published author I know how difficult it is to get sales for your book. And for your book to be still in print and read many decades later is a hell of an achievement.
- A second related reason is that these books have sold many million copies and you can judge their popularity and effectiveness from this fact.
- The third reason is that there is nothing new under the sun. The issues and problems that are people are grappling with now affected people many decades ago. Human nature has not changed in that time and nor have the challenges and the methods of dealing with them.
- Another reason is that a lot of the books that are published are not worth the paper they are printed on. They have been written by people who do not have any expertise or experiential understanding but who are simply looking to make money. Unless you have sound reasons for trusting the expertise of the author of the book you are thinking of buying, keep your credit card in your pocket. It is not just the question of wasting your time and money; the main reason is that you may be misguided and commit blunders by following the advice of incompetent people. I am speaking from experience.
After mentioning all the reasons why you should stick to the old classics I am in a bit of an awkward position because I myself have written a self-help book and I would like you to buy it. If you are impressed with the quality of the advice above take a look at my Kindle book at Amazon. Link is below.
The advice you will get in the book I have written is what I have learned through hard experience. I have sweated blood to learn the lessons that I explain to you. The book is about surviving in life but young professionals starting a career will benefit from it as well. Click on the link below; you won’t regret it.
