This is probably the most subversive article you have ever read. Basically, I am stating that the American granting their citizens (in their Constitution) the rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness is flawed philosophically.
Quantum Physics and the teachings of mystics of past ages tell us that the Universe is an organic whole comparable to the human body. Our position is similar to that of cells in the human body. The cells in our body exist for the purpose of maintaining the well being and survival of the whole body. There is no meaning to the existence of the cells other than that.
Hindu philosophy also states that the BMI (i.e the Mind-Body-Intellectual-Feeling aggregate) that constitutes our ego is not the self (or the soul or Atman). Happiness is a feeling or emotion and our being happy or otherwise is not important or relevant to either the Universe or our soul (or Atman). Please refer to the book, The Quest of the Overself by Paul Brunton, for more on this subject.
Now the pursuit of happiness by American citizens basically translates into the pursuit of money and being happy by consuming products and services that money can buy. We can see the effects of this flawed concept through events such as climate change and the effect on our environment.
According to a simple Google search the share of North America if the world GDP is 27.95%. If I remember correctly the share of the United States was as much as 40% some decades ago but in recent years other countries in Asia have adopted the American model for their economies and their share in world GDP has increased.
So this is the main reason why America occupies the centre stage in world politics. If the American people stop consuming products then the world economy will collapse.
I have not problem with the Americans granting the rights of Life and Liberty to their citizens (not that they are likely to be very interested in my opinions). But telling them to pursue happiness was a mistake the results of which we are seeing now and will continue to see in the decades and centuries to come.
Prior to the Industrial revolution mankind survived without damaging the environment. Our pursuing happiness based on the American model is now threatening the survival of the human race and many other species besides.
But what do you think will happen if this concept is taken seriously by world governments? If people stop consuming products and services the world economy will collapse and there will human suffering worldwide on a gigantic scale and more than likely bloody revolutions and perhaps anarchy and failure to maintain rule of law in many countries.
And yet philosophy and the findings of Quantum Physics are what they are.
I am not a revolutionary or prophet or politician and I do not have a solution to this problem, We can only hope that science continues to make advances and new inventions will enable us to thrive and maintain our present lifestyle and habits without damaging the environment irreparably.
This is at the level of society. At an individual level I would advice you to not seek happiness in making money and consumption of products but take an interest in religion and spiritual growth, which I believe is a time-honoured way of serving the Universe or God.
I’ll end here. Hope this helps someone. Please explore this blog for more articles on Politics, Spirituality and Self Help. If you liked this article then please share it on Facebook and Twitter and feel free to post your comments or contact me. Link to contact is below.

Interesting article. Living in the US, I do agree with the philosophy of pursuing life, liberty and happiness. While the American people do pursue the means to enable a comfortable lifestyle for themselves, they are also basically kind, generous and charitable. The younger generation is seriously interested in environmental issues and climate change. My opinion is that there should be a balance in life. Enjoy life in accordance with your personal preference , but reach out and help others; make a difference in the world.
Thanks for your comment. I agree that there is much that is good about American society. There is no going back now; we cannot go back to the middle ages because we want to preserve the environment. Hopefully more science and the American spirit will lead to a solution for climate change.
