A Guide For Wannabe Entrepreneurs

None of us likes to admit that we are mistaken or wrong about something.

In my case and perhaps in the case of very many people I have a morbid fear of making mistakes. And this has had a disastrous effect on my online endeavors.

This fear of making mistakes is a trait that might be of use had I been a scientist or a researcher. In those fields my obsessing over details and researching would have been required and useful. But as a person wanting to earn online such a trait worked against me for a long time and it is only now that I have become aware of it.

I have spent many years reading marketing books and very little time on actually attempting to make money online. I need to allow myself to make mistakes otherwise I will not attempt anything at all.

Emerson wrote in his essay on Self Reliance:

The voyage of the best ship is a zigzag line of a hundred tacks. See the line from a sufficient distance, and it straightens itself to the average tendency.

Now if the ship refused to set sail until it could travel in a straight line to its destination then it would never embark at all. We all need to make the attempt and make corrections when we find that we have erred. That is the way we have some chance at least of reaching our destination. If we don’t even take the single step on the journey we may avoid all mistakes but we will never succeed in reaching our goals.

This painful self examination may be of little use to me now (at age 59). Had I been 35 or 40 years younger I could have made a proper choice as far as my career was concerned.

But who knows: some youngster reading this blog will find it useful and be guided by what I have written.

There are many other traits that are required to be a successful entrepreneur. And to be fair to myself very few people actually have what it takes. The attitudes and skills can be cultivated but most people want a good job and do not think of working for themselves. I have read that only about 5% of all people have an entrepreneurial mindset.

I have been reading some Internet Marketing related material and some bits relating to attitudes and mindset really stuck. Following is a list of points that were made. If any reader wants to read the entire article please contact me and I will send it to you.

Here are the points:

  1. Identify the habits and attitudes that are holding you back and work to counter them
  2. Take Chances
  3. Become Optimistic
  4. Be Solution Oriented
  5. Be Unconventional
  6. Distrust Conventional Authority and Wisdom
  7. Work Harder on Yourself Than You Do On Your Job
  8. Replace Negative Thinking with Positive

Now the science of Psychology says that our character and personalities are fixed by out genes and the upbringing we had in our childhood. So most people trying to build a successful business will not succeed. But this objection is covered by point (6) above.

As I said earlier if you are interested in the full article contact me.
