From Sex to Superconsciousness

I was a firebrand when I was a youth, ever ready to act and speak in controversial ways. Now I think I have moved to the opposite extreme and do not generally say anything which might offend someone. I am not sure that this is entirely a good thing but nobody stays young and fearless forever, once bitten twice shy and so my excessive caution is not really surprising.

But ever so rarely I come across a book that makes me feel young again. The one which had this effect and which I have just finished reading is From Sex to Superconsciousness by Osho.

Read the book – especially if you are young.

Osho talks about the how and why of sexual attraction. According to him the reason why people crave sex is not just because of some biological urge but because during the peak sex experience we experience superconsciousness – a state of egolessness and timelessness. We move beyond the ego and time; a state which is our own true nature and once we experience that we are ready to move heaven and earth to experience it again.

And the same state – beyond ego and time – can be experienced through meditation.

Osho also speaks of the reasons why there is a population explosion in the East and the exact opposite in the Western countries. He talks about why marriages are stable in the East and not so in the West. According to him sex has a physical level, a psychological level and a sacred dimension. Marriages in the Eastern countries – arranged marriages – are centred around the physical dimension. And those in the West – love marriages – are centred around the psychological dimension.  Since the mind changes very rapidly as compared to the body (which is relatively stable) marriages in the West do not last long.

Osho describes himself as an enemy of sex. But he advocates knowledge about sex as the first step to being free of it and attaining superconsciousness. It is as if a person is living in a small dingy room (an analogy for sex). Unless a person opens his eyes and sees the ugliness around him, he has no chance of seeing anything better. A person with his eyes open can open the window and witness the sky, the sun, the moon and the entire outdoors. Such a person can move away from his ugly room and live in the blessedness of superconsciousness.

But a person who does not want to educate himself about sex is comparable to someone who does not want to see the ugliness of his room and keeps his eyes shut tightly. Such a person has no chance of witnessing and experiencing the glory of the vast outdoors.

Then again Osho speaks of sex comparing it with coal. There is a similarity between a piece of coal and a diamond. Both are made of the same elements, but the diamond is precious and beautiful whereas coal is common and dirty. The sex experience according to Osho can be used as a ladder in order to turn yourself into a diamond of superconsciousness. Osho gives practical hints about how one can try turning the sex experience into a quest for superconsciousness.

Osho received death threats from people who did not like him speaking publicly about sex. But times have changed and we are living in a more modern and less conservative society now. I do not anticipate death threats from anybody for writing this blog post but I am not a spiritual guru like Osho was.

Keep an open mind and buy and read From Sex to Superconsciousness. Nothing good has come out of ignorance and when it comes to the sex urge which can motivate us to do so much good as well as drive us to utter depravity, it is best if we are as well informed as possible. The book is an easy read and you should be able to finish it in 2 or 3 days.
