How to Impress your Boss or Client

I think that to impress your boss or client it helps if you do four things:

  1. Master the details of the task that is given to you. It is truly said: God is in the details. Some people say that the devil is in the details but no matter. Details are important and you need to have them at your fingertips when you are talking to your boss.
  2. Strive for precision and exactness in your speech. Such speech will impress all people you converse with, not just your boss or clients and customers.
  3. Master public speaking. It helps if you are a good conversationalist and can explain your point well.
  4. Be a person of integrity. Please see the link below for my take on integrity and what it means and why it is important.

So that is point (4) explained. Regarding point (3) pick up any of Dale Carnegie’s excellent books on public speaking. They are available at Amazon for very reasonable prices.

This article is about points (1) and (2) above.

I first read the sentence – Strive for precision and exactness in your speech – in one of Dale Carnegie’s books on public speaking. It immediately made an impression on me and I have tried, with some degree of sincerity, to implement it in my life. Another very useful rule is to strive to be accurate when you are thinking or speaking.

And to attain to precision and exactness in your speech you must first strive for precision and exactness in your thought.

And that is a very constructive way of spending your time.

I am suffering from a mental ailment and one of the main methods through which I was able to surmount the ailment and lead a normal life is that I tried sincerely for precision and exactness in my thought.

To be exact in your thought and speech you need to master the details of whatever it is that you are dealing with. That means that ideally you need to have had the experience; you need to have experiential understanding.

I learnt this at a Vipassana retreat. The teacher, S.N Goenka, said that it is common knowledge that the Divine exists within us. But what use is that to us unless we have experienced it. We will continue to suffer unless we gain the experience of the Divine. And only a person who has experienced the Divine – who has walked the path – can serve as a guide to your journey.

Similarly, if you want to know what the work culture is at a particular company talk to people who have had the experience of working there. Or if you want to impress your boss then do the work, master the details and then you will be able to be precise and exact in your speech. You will also be able to be a guide to others who have the same task.
