Are You Afraid of Dying…Then Read This

I would like to write some articles on the subject of death. I know that this topic makes a lot of people uncomfortable so if you like you can skip my later articles on this subject and only go through what I am posting today. Who knows, you might be better served by not reading all that I have to say. As the saying goes: ”Less is more.”

Today I am just going to give you the link to a YouTube video that is particularly interesting and instructive. The person delivering the talk, Eben Alexander, had a near death experience and is also a trained Neurosurgeon and scientist. He has critically examined his own near death experience and because there is a high probability that his experience was authentic he has been taken seriously by the medical community and also the scientists generally speaking.

The video is one hour and 40 minutes in length but is worth watching and holds our interest throughout.

The key takeaways I got from watching the video are:

  1. We are eternal spiritual beings as stated in Hinduism, Christianity and other major religions.
  2. The Deity who created us is filled with unconditional love. We do not need to do something to deserve the love that It has for us. This is something that will never be taken away from us.
  3. There is absolutely nothing to fear either in this life or the next.
  4. All of us are taken care of by the Deity.
  5. We can do nothing wrong. As long as we are prepared to face the consequences of our actions everything will turn out well in the end.  This point is particularly for Christians, I think, because Christianity emphasis the concept of sin. Since this talk was delivered to a Christian audience Dr Alexander may have wanted to mention this point.

Ok, so here’s the link to the video

For those of you who want to do further reading Dr Alexander has written a book called Proof of Heaven which has been well received and a bestseller ever since it was published. I can also recommend The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche. This book details many other near death experiences that have been found to be authentic. Another old classic is Life after Life by Raymond Moody.

But to get the full benefit of these teachings it is not enough to read and watch the suggested material only once. You need to remind yourself of these truths over and over as you go through the day and by reading and rereading. Remembrance of these basic facts is essential so that we imbibe and absorb these lessons and change as a person. Also think of the implications of these takeaways or assumptions and how you can apply them to your life.

I would like to end this article with a quote by Carl Sagan:

I recommend almost dying to everybody. It’s character building. You get a much clearer perspective of what is important and what isn’t, the preciousness and beauty of life.

I hope you found this article interesting.
